Financials Lead while Tech Lags

Dow +53.28 at 12433.33, Nasdaq +5.31 at 2785.75, S&P +4.76 at 1332.92

[] The Nasdaq has eased off of its opening gain, but the broader market has built on its opening bounce. Large-cap components like Apple (AAPL 333.41, -1.65) and Google (GOOG 573.97, -4.19) have hampered the Nasdaq Composite, but financial issues (+0.6%) have helped give a lift to the S&P 500.

Investment banks like Goldman Sachs (GS 162.48, +1.52) and diversified financial services plays like JPMorgan Chase (JPM 47.23, +0.39) are providing leadership to the financial sector. British banks are especially strong this morning, though. Specifically, Barclays (BCS 20.26, +0.84) is up more than 4%.

8.8% Is NOT the Real Unemployment Rate

Headlines declare that the unemployment rate dropped again this past month. There were many experts who thought we would see a rise in unemployment. So perhaps the “seemingly” positive data was a main driver of the recent stock market rally in the face of not-so-strong economic data here in the States, the catastrophe in Japan and revolution in the Middle East.

It is true (I think?) that 216,000 jobs were added last month and that number does seem to be growing each month, but when I hear quotes of 8.8% as our national unemployment rate, I just cringe!

It pains me to see people get misled day in and day out. I know that in my own life I wish everyone I met would tell me the raw truth.

Molycorp (MCP) Takes a Breather

After a slow start, the bulls have managed to push the major indexes higher despite some negative headwinds.  Futures were pointing towards a lower open after another debt downgrade of Portugal and the bulls were looking weak after getting some disappointing economic news.  Shortly after the bell, the ISM Services Index for March came in at 57.3 versus expectations for a print of 59.5.

Houston, Apollo (APOL) Has a Problem

The bulls got off to a slow start as they let the bears take the early lead at the open.  Futures were pointing towards a flat to slightly higher start but turned negative after our morning update.  Economic news was light before the bell and some of the weakness at the start can be attributed to the S&P/CaseShiller Home Price Index which came in at 3.1% for January.  The report showed home prices fell in 19 of the 20 largest U.S. cities tr
